Type of 'eco friendly' surfaces available to you and ones that you should avoid. To enable full compliance with the new planning restrictions

Traditional stone sets

These products either need to be laid to falls away from buildings to allow surface water to naturally drain, or they need to be laid professionally to falls which, in turn, take surface water to an infiltration trench.

Traditional concrete sets

These products either need to be laid to falls away from buildings to allow surface water to naturally drain, or they need to be laid professionally to falls which, in turn, take surface water to an infiltration trench.

Gravel

Should be laid professionally on an excavated surface, hard core base compacted with a suitable stabilisation/separation membrane.Must have a degree of edge resytraint in the form of raised edgings, brick or concrete sets.

Permeable paving

Allows water to permeate through the paving, must be supplied with a membrane and be professionally laid to avoid weed growth and sinkage.

Grass pavers

Laid on a pourus surface such as type 2 the load bearing plates can contain gravel or turf, allowing the surface to be driven upon

Infiltration method

Infiltration trench laid under the paved surface, if installed correctly this method is the most cost effective way of demonstrating sustainable drainage. This method is perfectly acceptable when used in conjunction with standard paver blocks or setts.

Surfaces no longer suitable (Unless full compliance with the planning restrictions are displayed). This would mean that if the new surface, even if it is an overlay to existing, is larger than 5 square metres the householder is responsible to show that sustainable drainage is demonstrated in the form of stormwater crates (infiltration), infiltration trenches etc. It is no longer acceptable to run surface water to the existing gullies. As resin bonded stone driveways rely on the 'cheaper' overlay to existing concrete driveways or tarmacaddum driveways it is unlikely that planning permission would be granted and our advice is to check with your local planning departement prior to engaging a contractor to carry out this type of works. If you have been advised against planning, our advice is strongly to check as retrospective disputes can easily result in having to remove surfaces to comply.

Patterned imprinted concrete

Gravel overlays

Resin bonded stone overlays. Our advice of 25 years experience is to avoid this product, just look at the Chevasse park in Liverpool One. Only people have walked on this and it has had to be completely replaced in one year and is lifting once again.
